Understanding the Challenges of Historic Buildings - Case Study: Aran Sweater Market Galway

On Thursday the 21st of March, 2019, David Humphreys will present a case study examining the refurbishment of a medieval ruin at Quay Street Galway in the context of Irish legislation and the challenges it presents.

In March 2016 ACP were commissioned by the new owner of the derelict building (part medieval and part 19th century) to design a commercial outlet within the building, obtain planning permission and procure the works. Partners in the project were TOBIN Consulting Engineers.  The ruinous building had been derelict for over 10 years and was an eyesore at this important part of Galway City Centre, beside the Spanish Arch.  In July 2018, the Aran Sweater Market opened its doors in the newly refurbished building.

The event takes place in the Limerick Institute of Technology and admission is free. Please register for the event in advance by clicking the image below or logging in to www.engineersireland.ie
